Facts of life

Last December, I was invited by my father’s friend to go to his stable and get to know the race “Cavalo Lusitano”, or Lusitan Horse. The guy wanted me to do some pictures of his stable, the horses and the terrain, that was going to suffer some alterations and he wanted to do the before/after thing.

He introduced me to the trainer of the horses. It was a sunny and wonderful day with beautiful light to do photos, but the training session was over. I don’t like poses or fakes pictures so I didn’t try to convince him to simulate a training session. He told me to go next week it there wasn’t rain falling. We started chatting about these wonderful animals that horses are. Later on we talked about cameras and photography. He also told me that he used to run a Photography Store, that was his passion before starting training horses.

A couple of times I was about to take a picture of him, he really really looks like a character for me. Something inside me told me not to take his picture. On the other hand, I was returning to the place next week, so I could get a better picture of him training the horses.

The day I was supposed to go there again, the sky was a mess of grey and black and the rain to come was obvious. We didn’t meet.

I came to England and missed the chance of getting what was probably going to be his last picture.

He died three weeks after that.
